Last month, Mercy Flights received an update from nationally renowned cardiac specialist Dr. Brian Gross. Dr. Gross, who has helped the Rogue Valley achieve a top 10 ranking in the nation for cardiac care, shared Mercy Flights’ STEMI (ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction) outcomes over the past 6 years and had good things to say.

STEMI is a very serious type of heart attack during which one of the heart’s major arteries (one of the arteries that supplies oxygen and nutrient-rich blood to the heart muscle) is blocked. When a patient presents with STEMI, the goal is to complete the entire process from first medical contact to open artery in less than 90 minutes. Mercy Flights STEMI patient timelines have been 76 minutes or less for the past 6 years and 74 minutes in 2020. Here’s what Dr. Gross had to say:

“We wanted to share your STEMI metrics outcomes over the last several years. They are most impressive!…As always we appreciate your critical, time sensitive participation in one of the most effective (and earliest) STEMI programs in the country.”

According to Mercy Flights CEO, Sheila Clough, Dr. Gross has been instrumental in bringing key Southern Oregon caregivers together to work through systems of care that reduce the response times and improve patient outcomes in the region.

“He is truly an inspiration and the STEMI outcomes showcase years of collaboration between first responders, EMS and hospital professionals,” said Clough.

Great job Mercy Flights team!
